SPRING CAMPOUT NEAR TUCSON April 2017

ATTENTION, Happy Campers!  The Tucson Bus Mob’s SPRING CAMPOUT is almost upon us –.  So, it is time to quit your job, load up the bus and kids, and head south to the Dragoons!  We will be camping in a shady grove of cottonwoods and oaks, surrounded by rock formations, the likes of which you haven’t seen since the last time you were collecting mushrooms in Oregon.

Here are the details:

ATTENTION:  The Dragoon campground is primitive camping

WATER: There is no running water at the site or anywhere nearby so bring your own and bring plenty.

RESTROOMS:  There are no restrooms or porta-potties.  Please bring your little shower tents and portable camp toilets if you have one.

PICTURES:  If you want to see some pictures, visit my flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dedhed1950/sets/ and look for the Dragoons pics on pages 2, 4, 5.

ROADS:  The roads change with the rains.  The first ten miles of dirt road are wide and graded…no problem.  The next 2 miles or so that run along the base of the Dragoons to the campground have a few places that might slow you down, but have never presented any problem for my bus.  If your bus is lowered, you might have a problem.

DIRECTIONS:   1) From Tucson, take I-10 east to Benson.  2) Go south on Rte 80, almost to Tombstone.  3) Turn left (north) on Middlemarch Rd. (about one mile before Tombstone,  just past the Border Patrol inspection stop). It is well marked.  4) Drive  north on Middlemarch Rd. for 9.9 miles until you hit a Y marked with a Forest Service sign. 5) Turn left onto FS Road 687.  Go two miles until you get to a cattle guard. 6)  Turn right on FR4804 and proceed to the campground at end of the road.

The driving time from Tucson is about two hours and from Phoenix, about four hours.  Yes, a long drive but I promise that when you get there, you will agree it was worth the drive.  [Please note:  When you return to Benson, you will be required to pass through a Border Patrol checkpoint complete with friendly agents, curious  dogs, and maybe even Sheriff Arpaio!]

If you use a GPS or Google Earth, the campground is located at  31°52'24.92"N, 110° 1'2.94"W.

700 Rd. Breakfast & Campout. Flagstaff, AZ April 2017
Geoffrey Bishop has invited the ABC to share breakfast and campout. Firing up the breakfast machine! Day camp, overnight, coffee in the AM, your call! April 2017. Take 700 Rd. at exit 333 off I-17 just south of Flagstaff. Super easy road in, bugs can all make it, even low riders. The forest service has been out past this point doing clearing for the previous 4 years, so the roads have been taken care of. Geoffrey is inviting everyone out for camping and/or breakfast on Saturday. Bring your stove, hash browns, bacon, flapjacks, sausage, coffee, chainsaws, bows and arrows, rope swing and share with your VW camping friends. The campsite is 2-3 miles in on 700 Rd and it will be marked.

TEXAS VW CLASSIC  April  2017 in Fredricksburg, TX

FOUR PEAKS ADVENTURE  April 2017
Join the ABC for a trail bashing adventure in the Salt River Valley with camping and safari up and over the Four Peaks Mountains. This is recommended for stock height VW's as your slammed dub will get stuck in the first rut we encounter. Meeting 4:30-5pm Friday the 22th at Scott & Connie's house at the intersection of Crismon RD & Indigo in Mesa, AZ (Just north of Brown Rd) From there we travel the Apache Trail (aka Hwy-88) out to Burnt Corral campground on Apache Lake for some R&R. Sunday about noon we trek up to Roosevelt Lake then Pumpkin Center for fuel before we challenge the Four Peaks Mountain pass at 7500'. Or just show up anytime Friday, Saturday or Sunday about noon just for the trail bash.

LOU & GLYNDA PALOOZA 2017 Near Ft Huachuca, AZ
They are inviting us to hang out in their backyard in scenic southern Arizona wine country. Raffle prizes, Saturday pot luck, on site camping, Sunday breakfast burritos by Lou and great company to hang out with. More details coming soon...

MT PINAL CAMPOUT  May, 2017 Near Globe, AZ.
Join your bus camping friends for a scenic weekend spring trip that is 17 miles up an easy gravel road to the top of Mt. Pinal near Globe, AZ (only 80-miles from Phoenix) Directions: Head east on Hwy-60 and just before Globe, AZ you will see a stoplight where Hwy-88 heads north...this is where you head south on Russell Rd. Pay attention to the street signs as Russell Rd. zigs and zags through town before it turns into a gravel road. The gravel road is not well marked...just stay on the most beaten path and as long as you are still going "up" you are on the right road and you wont miss our camp at the very top. You'll be rewarded with one of the most stunning views you can see from a bus. Lots of hiking and mountain biking opportunities. When feeling lonely the forest service lookout will invite you to join him in the tower that's 7600 feet above sea level. The weather changes without warning so camp under the trees and expect 85-35 degree temps, fog, hail, ferocious winds, insect swarms, rain and thunder that will crack your ear drums. In other words perfect for camping in a bus. Oh, and a few of the rabble bring along fire arms which they expend at a range at the bottom of Mt. Pinal. There will be a ridiculous Saturday evening pot luck so bring your favorite dish.
